If you have problems backing up files using the finder, maybe it's because the Finder can't copy files belonging to root. I don't know whether that's a cocoa-level thing, in which case it might make all your lovely backups from your shiny GUI backup utilities essentially useless if you ever need to restore your system, or whether it is peculiar to the Finder itself.

Anyway, it's dumb, and a bug. The unix cp works, and you can read the files and therefore make hand-copies of them, so what's the point in not letting the OS copy them for you..?
